Burkey's Furniture going out of business after 77 years
Family-owned retailer begins final liquidation sale October 10

LAVALE, Md. (October 8, 2024) — After 77 years of serving the Allegany County community, family-owned Burkey's Furniture announced it will close its doors permanently. The going-out-of-business sale begins October 10.

Burkey's Furniture has been providing high quality home furnishings and excellent customer service to its patrons since 1947. Owner Kathy Burkey is the daughter-in-law of founders Ed and Mary Burkey. She has devoted her life to running the business since her husband, John passed away five years ago, and she plans to retire after the liquidation sale is complete.

"It has been an honor to furnish the homes of so many families for the past 77 years," said Burkey. "My family and I are deeply grateful to all of our loyal customers and dedicated staff."

Burkey's Furniture is located at 900 National Hwy on the corner of National Highway and Oaklawn Avenue. The going-out-of-business sale opens to the public October 10 with merchandise across the 20,000-square-foot store priced to move quickly with deep discounts on furniture for every room in the home. Famous name brands include Bernards, Corinthian, D R Kincaid, Hammary, Hillsdale Furniture, Kingsdown, La-Z-Boy, Legends, New Classics, Null, Riverside, Vaughn-Bassett and more.

Management encourages early shopping for best selection and notes that all current orders will be fulfilled. The building is for sale and interested parties may contact Robert Jackson at (307) 729-3636 for more details.

Burkey's Furniture opened its first location 77 years ago on North Centre Street in Cumberland. In its earliest days, the store was filled primarily with televisions and appliances. After eight prosperous years, Ed and Mary Burkey moved their business to a new, larger location in LaVale. Over the next decade the store transitioned from selling appliances to offering an assortment of furniture and mattresses. This led to even greater success and to Burkey's Furniture expansion for a final time in 1965 to the current store on National Highway.

John Burkey took over his parents' business in 1979. He and his wife, Kathy, spent the next 40 years upholding their family legacy by maintaining a customer-centric approach in all aspects of the business, until John passed away in 2019 when Kathy took over the business.
